Misery Canyon

Zion National Park, UT

Canyoneering
If you love exploring and you're looking for a unique way to blend a variety of outdoor disciplines, then canyoneering just might be your sport! Hiking, navigation, rope and survival skills are essential if you want to stay out of trouble. However, the rewards outweigh the risks when you find yourself in a twisting, tight-walled canyon with only the narrowest view of daylight above your head. Add water to the mix and it's an experience like no other!

Logistics
A good map and compass and the skills to read them should get you there. Rope skills and occasionally some ingenuity usually gets you back, and a camera will capture the memories. Add gear like canyoneering boots, gloves, and (sometimes) a wetsuit and you'll likely enjoy the experience more!

DIY
The whole American Southwest is filled with canyons to explore, with the area around Zion National Park offering some of the best and most accessible ones. A good place to start is the Zion Adventure Company, where you can get current conditions, route information, rent gear, and even hire a guide. For the experienced, there are plenty of guidebooks and also good information to be found online to help you plan your trip.
